Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns, and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

 Just what you expect August 15, 2008

For you old guys you will have instant nostalgia. I was doing a highlight reel for my son's youth football season and used this as the sound track for it. Of course all the days loved it. The kids however were a bit non-pulsed by it -smile. But of course I would have had no chance picking music they would like but I suppose there is some ESPN set of tracks that might work? But I loved this audio track for the highlight reel.

If you're fairly young and have become accustomed to mediocrity as normal you'll enjoy this CD. However, if you're old enough to remember those things called record albums, in particular the 2 record set called Music from NFL Films you're going to find this scaled down version a little disappointing. It has some of the best tunes but I was amazed to find that others were missing. Even the rousing Big Game America was not included. The CD puts great emphasis on John Facenda's poetry and on sounds heard on the field. Coaches yelling, players boasting and grunting like neanderthals, that sort of thing. It does make you feel like you're right there on the sidelines. Power and the Glory captures the spirit of pro football well. It's just not quite what I was looking for. Still, there's plenty of good music for the low price so I give it a "thumbs up". Since we live in a time when practically nothing has the quality it once did, this collection of NFL films music is probably the best deal you're going to get for years to come.

Perfect background music for creating fun home videos of your little future NFL stars. Takes all baby boomers back to the Saturday afternoon highlight segments we'd watch to get cranked up and go play in the sandlots.

My son played high school football and is starting college and playing there also. As I followed his games I remembered more and more about growing up a Baltimore Colts fan in the 1960's and watching NFL Films. When my son started quoting Vince Lombardi I knew the "good old days' were at least partially back and the music sounded like this. Favorite song: Up She Rises, the orchestral version of "Drunken Sailor." The "Voice of God" narrator makes football's most mundane moments sound as urgent as today's news. All that's missing is "the frozen tundra of Lammmm-beauuuu Field" which NFL Films says never was actually said on their shows. Planned use: to play this in the car on the way to my son's games this fall.
Great NFL Theme Music July 5, 2007

The NFL off-season seems to last forever, but this can help. It is great music, fun to listen to, and a great way to pass the time. Don't be surprised if you find it as much fun as the NFL Films themselves. Also, great listening for exercise or driving.
