Amazon.com essential recording Making Movies is Dire Straits's third album and includes several epic numbers that remain among Mark Knopfler's finest work. "Tunnel of Love, " "Romeo And Juliet" (covered by the Indigo Girls), and "Solid Rock" all work with the same distinctive galloping rhythm underneath Knopfler's country-blues staccato guitar. The addition of Springsteen's E Street Band pianist Roy Bittan hardly seems less a coincidence considering the Springsteen-esque tone of the material. --Rob O'Connor

Dire Straits kick off the 1980s with one of the greatest rock albums ever made January 5, 2009 Terrence J. Reardon (Port Saint Lucie, FL) Dire Straits' third album entitled Making Movies was released in October of 1980 on Vertigo/Phonogram in Europe and on Warner Bros here in the United States. By the time Dire Straits recorded its third album, Dire Straits had two back-to-back Gold selling albums and were getting better as a band. However, Dire Straits suffered its first personnel change as lead singer/lead guitarist/songwriter Mark Knopfler's rhythm guitarist brother David left Dire Straits. For Making Movies, Knopfler plus bass player John Illsley and drummer Pick Withers would record as a three piece. Plus Knopfler took over as producer with famed engineer/producer (and later chairman of Interscope Records) Jimmy Iovine plus Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band playing keyboards. I was in for a treat whenI first acquired the album in January of 1998 (although was familiar with the first three tracks and "Solid Rock" as US radio played those songs often). We begin the album with the eight minute plus epic "Tunnel of Love" which starts with Bittan's organ and piano rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The Carousel Waltz" before the band comes in for an epic which is of the ages featuring Knopfler's phenomenal guitar work. Next Mark breaks out the National Steel acoustic guitar for the six minute "Romeo and Juliet" which is a modern telling of the famed book. The first side ended with the track "Skateaway" which starts with drums fading in before keyboards, guitar, vocals and bass guitar come to life and speaks of a woman who roller skates her way through life. The album's second side started with the rocker "Expresso Love" which is a great rocker. I know some complained that Dire Straits were trying to go the Springsteen route but a great song. Next is the song "Hand in Hand" which was a great song. Next is another hard rocker out of the US rock radio staple and longtime concert staple "Solid Rock" which has great playing all around. We close the album with the countryish sounding "Les Boys" which showed the band's humor somewhat about German boys who "do their thing". Making Movies peaked at #14 on the Billboard chart and went Platinum here in the US with a million copies sold upon its release. Sales aside, Making Movies was to prove Dire Straits were going to dominate the 1980s. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Yes, the "M" word applies November 24, 2008 MJS (CA USA) I don't usually go around using the word "Masterpiece," but this CD rates it. "Romeo and Juliet" and "Skateaway" are my favorites, but there are other great ones here too. "Les Boys" is the only loser - I generally skip it. Dire Straits has some other great songs, but this is their only CD I put on regularly and listen though to almost the end. Some really great lyrics in here "She tortures taxi drivers just for fun - she just let a big truck crease her hip" or "Oh, Romeo, yeah I used to have a scene with him." Give it a try.
One of the greats September 24, 2008 Jay D. Learned (Rochester, NY USA) One of the best collections from one of the best bands of the rock era. Dire Straits at their best.
one of the best dire strait albums ever September 16, 2008 Charles F. Marks (columbia sc) tunnel of love, skateaway, romeo and juliet, expresso love, hand in hand, solid love and les boys. This album and these songs are a must for truely haunting rocknroll melodies that are timeless...Crank it up, I just got the remasters edition and it is remarkable how much I miss these guys...Thanks, Charlie
Timeless Rock August 29, 2008 G. YEO (Singapore) Before Dire Straits found themselves plastered on MTV's heavy rotation with Money for Nothing, they were artists in every sense of the word. And this was their classic: MAKING MOVIES - featuring signature guitars which seemed to glide across and above everything, counterpointed with Mark Knopfler's unspectacular but gentle voice. Listening to how they executed this with such verve and vision, one realises they don't make albums like that anymore (I do hear echoes of this in the Wallflowers first release but it ain't the same) Along with their debut, Dire Straits never made a better album than this one. Romeo and Juliet and Tunnel of Love - these are some of the most romantic guitar paeans ever written. I love the integrity of this album. It's timeless and precious, and cinematic.
