Australian-born soul starlet Sam Sparro has been making ears prick up of late. His savvy blend of soul, funk and modern electronica nods to 70s and 80s legends like Stevie Wonder and Hall &s; Oates, but Sparro brings a sassy style and modern production ethic that renders his music 21st Century fresh. Armed with a smooth, mercurial voice, Sparro sashays slickly through disco, funk and soul, moving waists with the punchy electro-funk of "Too Many Questions", "Black & Gold" and "Cut Me Loose", soaring soul like "Hot Mess" and darker material like "Pocket' and the synth-laden "Sick" (which comes over all Calvin Harris, admittedly minus the kitsch, ironic appeal). "Clingwrap" is pop-lite Prince, and there's the occasional slower track like "Waiting For Time" and "Cottonmouth", but mostly this is an upbeat collection for good time people. His Daft Punk-meets-Jamiroquai single "Black & Gold" has already earned him deserved comparisons to contemporary blue-eyed soul boys like Jamie Lidell; Sam Sparro is assured enough to make him a star.--Danny McKenna

Album Description
This is the assured and confident self-titled debut from Australian born Sam Sparro. Having a diverse and internationalbackground (via Sydney to L.A. to London), Sam stands out from the usual crowd. With his mix of soul and electro-funk recalling influences from legends such as Stevie Wonder to contemporaries like Jamie Lidell and Seal, this is a deeply modern sensuous soul album. Includes the single 'Black & Gold'. 13 tracks. Universal. 2008.

4 out of 5 stars good cd   December 26, 2008
J. T. Sheldon (Beaver County, PA)
while the only real stand out single type tracks are "black and gold" and "21st century life" a lot of the other tracks are fantastic as well.

the other songs that stand out as really good for me are: too many questions, waiting for time, cottonmouth, pocket, clingwrap and the hidden track 14 which i like to just call "hungry"

i bought this cd as cheap as i could because i wasn't at all sure if i was going to like it because all i was going on was my love of "black and gold" but i honestly have to say i'm really digging this cd.

4 out of 5 stars The next STAR on the horizon, Sam Sparro!!   October 11, 2008

WHAT an exciting new star in the making, AGAIN! By now, if you're digging deeper into any Sam info, you already know the "tasty bits" ie; former child star, writing songs while at the coffeeshop, etc. But I'd like to add for this young man to SO deliciously re-energize The 80's 'Lectro-Disco-Pop sound so very well from his own writings - without 1 single sample or hook - I find just wonderful!! I've played & replayed my CD to everyone who'll give him a listen & all have come back with the same great feelings about Sam! I feel Sam will be around for MUCH time to come!! As long as his Management/Promotion Teams don't screw with this good thing! I can't wait to see Sam LIVE!! To reproduce his sound on stage will be great times for sure & to see another "Family Member" on tour will be great!! The CD is 1 fun groove from start to finish! Some fluff (for my tastes) but I can't find ANY reason to slam this CD!! TRULY money well spent!! Donnie ;)

I ordered the CD for one song "Black and Gold" but ended up liking over half of the tracks on the CD. It was a good purchase over all. There is an extra track.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't like the lyrics   August 12, 2008

I heard Sparro's Black and Gold song today for the first time, rushed over to the internet to see the video, LOVED it, then I saw some interviews of him and read the lyrics, apparently the song is not a love song but is about god. Then the song became sad to me that his lyrics talk about not wanting to exist if he can't prove there is a god. BUMMER. Great tune, but I won't be buying the CD now.

i feel a way of something beyond them
i don't see what i can feel
if vision is the only validation
then most of my life isn't real

'cause if you're not really here
then the stars don't even matter
now i'm filled to the top with fear
but it's all just a bunch of matter
'cause if you're not really here

5 out of 5 stars I Love this Guy!!   August 8, 2008

Songs are upbeat and rhythmic. This is "club-scene" music with a liberal flavor. The songs are about water shortage, pollution, hunger&famine, recycling. Black and Gold is just HOT. I really think this whole CD is very well put together, fun and definitely worth buying. I bought 2 cd's for gifts.
