4 out of 5 stars Great Unique game, but glitchy play and high price.   September 8, 2008
GDMF (Millwood, NY)
This is a great game.
Very unique, it looks more like a board game when you play than other PS3 games.
The game involves choosing how to allocate resources to beat other competing civilizations in a variety of topics.
Unfortunatly the graphics get jumpy at times, which shouldn't happen in a console game, especially since the graphics are nothing to brag about.
I like the game, but it doesn't seem to have earned the $59 premium game price.

4 out of 5 stars Fun   September 7, 2008

This game is a lot of fun. It may seem to get a little old after playing it through a few times, but it's still a lot of fun and the fact that all the civilizations have different advantages makes things interesting. A good game overall.

3 out of 5 stars Civilization on the console   September 4, 2008
Brian Mitchell (New York, NY USA)
This game was fun but I felt it oversimplified some of these classic turn based strategy features. Things like hot-seat support and map editing are nowhere to be found. Diplomacy is really simple in this game. There is no play after victory if you are the type of person who would like to try a few more things before they call the scenario over. Of course, the really annoying part of the game is the units which are too few and in between given a pretty shallow and fast moving tech tree... you can also only build one nuke for an entire scenario which prevents the more aggressive war like scenarios out of the picture.

Initially disappointed, I found that there was plenty of depth in the current mechanics to keep me occupied. The user interface is adequate though it certainly isn't as easy to use as some other turn based games, particularly with finding and selecting units that are not active. This is a good game if you like turn based games though I might pass on it if you don't happen to know civilization already.

Of course, my biggest question is: when are they bringing us Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire again? Preferably to the console as well.

4 out of 5 stars Great game I can play over and over again... very addicting   August 29, 2008
J. Ives (Raleigh, NC United States)
I really enjoy this game.... things move along kind of fast so it definitely isn't like the PC games that can draw out for weeks at a time, but it isn't so fast that you're done in a few hours (at least not at the higher difficulties). Not sure where the 4 hours of play limit came from as I have played several games straight through on the weekend that lasted 7 to 8 hours (I did take a few 10 minute brakes here and there but most of it was play time). I've only had the game end on me once without fulfilling the requirements for one of the victories and that was b/c I was intentionally drawing it out.

Along the same lines, you can prevent any of the victories from ending the game early by simply not building the required Wonder, not conquering the last capital, or not launching the space craft if you want to play around more in the your game (you have to intentionally decide to end the game with a specific Victory).

There are several different ways of winning the game and depending on which Civilization you chose you will have a head start in one of those areas (domination, science, money, or culture) so strategy is important... you can't just brute force your way through the higher levels.

The only downside to the game for me is the limitations when dealing with other Civilizations. I was kind of expecting something more in line with the old PC game Masters of Orion 2 where you can create research and trade treaties, non-aggression pacts, or even alliances. For me, it usually ends up that the only use of the Democracy feature is for other Civilizations to threaten me or declare war... but, I'm still new to the game so maybe there is more for me to discover (and I am constantly discovering new features beyond the basics controls).

All in all, I like the game a lot and would buy it again. Ohh, and the graphics are awesome, especially on a large HD screen!

4 out of 5 stars Great graphix for short play   August 26, 2008
Anthony S. N. Sabol (Texas Medical Center)
While this is a great addition to the franchise, it is not as long or in depth as the PC/mac versions that have been out previously. It is a great way to sink 4 hours. While, I'm not regretting buying this title, I don't think I'll be playing it again in the near future. I'll still be playing CIV IV for the added depth and larger worlds. Great as an intro to the series if you have never played before.
