Amazon.com essential video This 1957 version of the Tony-winning Pajama Game is one of the finest film adaptations of a hit Broadway musical. The story is simple enough: Babe Williams, the head of a pajama company's grievance committee, falls for an exec--the new superintendent--Sid Sorokin (John Raitt). Doris Day, as Babe, has never been so efficiently cute. Raitt starred in the Broadway version, as did much of the film's cast (Day replaced original stage star Janis Paige). The Pajama Game is filled with recognizable, classic songs, done so well and danced so athletically that this musical can engage an action-film fan. Bob Fosse's trademark choreography shines. Check out two numbers danced by the late, underused, and underrated Carol Haney, who performs amazing feats for "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway." Both Day and Raitt deliver lovely renditions of "Hey There." They're also supported by a great cast that includes, in addition to Haney, a slyly coy Reta Shaw and a dynamic Eddie Foy Jr. --N.F. The Pajama Game October 31, 2008 lola Was so suprised to see this movie listed. Saw it many years ago and never saw it on TV, I jumped at the chance to buy it. Amazon got it here in excellent condition.
pajama game October 28, 2008 A. P. Lewis (new zealand) interesting seeing how films change in their production style over the years. fun remembering some of the songs i had forgotten.
Pajama Game- Musical Lover September 20, 2008 Babara Truesdell I am a lover of Musicals and Pajama Game has one of the highest energy and great music as most of the musicals of that time. I think anyone who is an "oldtime" musical lover would enjoy this musical as well as any high school theater teacher looking for a musical suitable to perform.
Great Entertainment July 29, 2008 R. Mix (Arizona) Overall I am not a Doris Day Fan but I bought this because of John Raitt who as far as I know made no other films. The music and dance was great, and I am sorry that this quality of musical productions have not been continued. During the past few months I have purchased some hundreds of dollars of musicals. Some I would not keep in my library but this one I most certainly will.
Widescreen version May 22, 2008 D. Hall This is a double-sided DVD, with the 3:4 version on one side (with the left and right sides of the picture chopped off, as you would expect) and the 16:9 (widescreen) version on the other. To make the widescreen version completely fill a 16:9 HDTV display, they chopped off the top and bottom of the frame. Arrgh. It would be nice for the next release (Blu-Ray?) to show the movie as originally shown, without anything cropped out. Which would leave modest bars on the left and the right.
