Good Value But Not Without a Major Flaw December 28, 2008 mix whit (Urbana, IL United States) First the good. Don't hesitate to order the refurb model. It looked brand new. Even though the drum had a sticker saying it was only 90% full, the printer told me it was 99% full. It prints *fast*. Duplex is great and paper saving. Having it on the network is a dream. I can print from laptops and desktops all over the house. Now the bad. The page curling complaints others have mentioned are real and significant. If you print a number of pages single sided, then you'll end up with a mess. My spouse prints large documents and she basically has to babysit the printer so she can pull pages out and straighten them because of this curl problem. I don't know why this printer has it...I haven't seen curling like this since the mid '90's in a laser printer. The problem is a real drag. When the printer arrived I had to spend a bunch of time trying to figure out why it wouldn't wake up after sleeping. It's a known problem. Read the discussion on this Amazon page for the answers--it was the *only* place on the 'net I found them (including Brother support). So, overall, it is still a good value. However, had I known just how bad the curling problem really is, I would have researched a bit more in case I found something else just as good but without the curl.
Excellent value; print quality a little less than optimal December 27, 2008 Scott Freutel (Seattle) In all respects but one I'm pleased with this printer. It was easy to set up w/ my Mac. It is reasonably quiet, quick to turn out first and subsequent copies, and the duplexing feature works well. However, the image quality is not as good as it might be. At first I thought I must be printing in "proof" mode, but in fact I wasn't. Still, for the price, it's a pretty great printer.
Good printer with very good price December 24, 2008 H. Mi (Palo Alto, CA, USA) I have to say that this is a great deal. I have been looking for a printer that is network ready and can print double-sided. I don't care about any other features such as copying or scanning. This one worked perfectly for me. Although it was a refurbished item, I couldn't see any sign of it being used. The toner cartridge was new and sealed. It was really easy to set up. I just had to put the toner cartridge in, plugged the power, and then connected it to my router (network cable not provided). Then, I popped the driver CD into my PC. It found the printer on the network in no time, and I was ready to print. All these took me about 10 minutes. The quality is definitely better than my inkjet printer. The speed is also fast. I printed about 20 double-sided pages in about a minute. Overall, this is a very good printer, with even a better price. You can't find a better deal than this.
Great printer for professionals at home December 13, 2008 909 (Loma Linda, CA) If you have lots of articles, text, etc to print, this is a great printer. I bought it a few years ago and love it. Easy to network to all computers/laptops in the house. It prints fast, auto duplex, and choice of tonor darkness. Great preset functions with my mac printing dialog box. Pros: fast, cheap, networked, auto duplex, easy presets Cons: loud, can't fill the paper tray because pickup mechanism can't pick it up, and tonor light comes on too early (see other comments for how to bypass this problem with the tonor)
Fast and efficient December 8, 2008 Dutch (Illinois) The printer was delivered ahead of schedule by Amazon and worked great right out of the box. I was a little concerned since I wanted to use the printer in my home network directly connected to the router. I shouldn't have had any concern as the included software worked well on both my Vista and XP computers. The print quality is what you'd expect from a laser and the unit remains in the power saving, idle mode until a print job is received. I am pleased with the purchase.
